In the great pantheon of ridiculous pre-season preparations, Coventry City’s warm-up for the 1993/94 season will surely take some beating.
The Sky Blues eschewed more modern go-tos such as far-flung trips to the Far East or the USA. Instead, manager Bobby Gould made the unusual choice to take his crop of top-flight footballers to an army barracks in Aldershot. Yeah, that’s not exactly textbook, is it?
Perhaps reckoning that the trip would be the perfect team-bonding exercise ahead of the opening day fixture away to Arsenal, Gould’s men headed off to Aldershot. Well, most of them. Before they’d even boarded the coach there were dissenting voices, with some players reportedly refusing to go.
