Gus Hamer's return: Should footballers ever go back?

They say never go back. Football is littered with examples of players who have returned to former clubs only to discover lightning rarely strikes twice. And yet Coventry City are doing exactly that, bringing Gus Hamer back to the CBS three years after he left for Sheffield United.
Talks have been going on in recent weeks between the Sky Blues and the popular midfielder Hamer, and now a £6m fee has been agreed between the two clubs.
Hamer, of course, was a key part of the team that reached the 2023 play-off final. In fact, many (myself included) believe that it was Hamer going off injured in the second half of that match that turned the tide of momentum away from the Sky Blues and allowed Luton to take the match to penalties (and we all know what happened there).
