It was a very familiar performance and result for Coventry City as the Sky Blues crashed out of the Carabao Cup with a 3-1 defeat to Aston Villa.
Frank Lampard made nine changes from Sunday’s defeat to Brighton. Bobby Thomas and Aurele Amenda were the sole survivors from the weekend. In came Daniel Bentley, Joel Latibeaudiere, Stephen Mfuni, Gus Hamer, Caleb Yirenkyi, Yann Gboho, Tatsuhiro Sakamoto and Sidiki Cherif.
After a 25-year wait to face Villa, the Sky Blues conspired to get off to the worst possible start. Villa were ahead after just seven minutes. Tammy Abraham, a man who before last night had managed just three goals in a Villa shirt, benefited from static defending from Bobby Thomas and finished calmly past Bentley.
