Kieran Maguire is clearly a fan of Doug King. What has really impressed the football finance expert is King’s shrewd recruitment. Maguire was particularly taken by the way in which King and sporting director (formerly head of recruitment) Dean Austin used the money brought in from the sales of Viktor Gyokeres and Gus Hamer and built an entire Championship-winning team.
‘He deserves nothing but plaudits,’ he says. ‘If you look at Coventry in 25/26, the net spend was £975,000. That is just genius. If I was Doug King I would go around with a big arrow pointing to that particular figure. That is so impressive.’
