GOALKEEPER WEEK: Why Coventry City never needed to worry about Carl Rushworth

After sweeping the board at last season’s awards night, the goalkeeper was a-sign-at-all-costs target. Eventually, after a protracted summer of negotiations, he arrived for a then-club record fee of £22.5m – the Sky Blues smashed their transfer record so many times during the summer that it’s difficult to keep up with just who was the title holder at any given point.

Ten goals conceded in four Premier League games later and questions were being asked about how wisely that money had been spent.

However, Rushworth’s class never left him, as we saw in an understatedly brilliant performance against Nottingham Forest. It didn’t have any of the jaw-dropping saves that peppered his performances last season, but what it absolutely did have was a commanding goalkeeper who bossed his six-yard box.
