When Dave Boddy arrived at Coventry City in early 2017, it was difficult to imagine where the club was heading. League Two was looming. Supporter protests had become a regular feature of matchdays. Crowds at the Ricoh Arena had dwindled and the relationship between the club, its owners, supporters and the city itself had become increasingly fractured.

Boddy saw the anger almost immediately. His first game after joining the club was against Millwall, when hundreds of tennis balls were thrown onto the pitch in protest against SISU. A few months later, thousands of plastic pigs interrupted the game against Charlton. By then, Coventry were heading towards the fourth tier.
