Phil Neal's Coventry City: Dressing-room rows, 'Yes boss' and smashing the club transfer record
02.11.26, 06:55 7 Minute Read
Phil Neal's time at Coventry City is an often-overlooked period, which is strange as it included training ground bust-ups, record Premier League finishes and the signing of Dion Dublin.
One of the most decorated footballers in English football history, Neal arrived at Highfield Road with a remarkable playing pedigree. During his time at Liverpool, he had won eight league titles, four European Cups and four League Cups. He had also represented England more than 50 times before moving into management with Bolton Wanderers.
When Bobby Gould returned to Coventry City in the summer of 1992, Neal was recruited as his assistant. It was an appointment that brought considerable experience to the club, although not everyone in the dressing room was convinced.
