It’s not often that someone dubbed ‘the new Pele’ turns up at Coventry City but that’s exactly what happened when Nii Lamptey arrived at Highfield Road in 1995.
Just how did the once-hottest property in African football end up in Coventry?
Lamptey’s story begins with a troubled homelife. He grew up in a busy household, living with his mother, grandmother and two brothers, alongside three aunts and their four children. The men of the family lived elsewhere due to work. Lamptey’s devotion to the game also regularly outweighed his desire to make it to school, something which greatly hindered his ability to read and write as he grew up.
