It’s a Wednesday afternoon late into the 1997/98 season at Ryton. Training finished hours ago, players have long since gone home.
But, three figures remain out there on the pitch. Sky Blues manager Gordon Strachan is working with his strike duo – Dion Dublin and Darren Huckerby. This was not an uncommon sight. Strachan would often keep the pair behind to work on their partnership, build the understanding and improve them as players.
Looking back today, this isn’t something that Huckerby takes for granted. He speaks openly on his feelings that Strachan was one of just a handful of managers that he worked under who cared about making his players better. They all cared about the results on a Saturday but very few put the focus that Strachan did into developing his players individually.
