Coventry City's return to the Premier League begins in exactly the same place as one of the greatest opening-day performances in the club's history.
In August 1993, Bobby Gould's side stunned Arsenal 3-0 at Highbury as Micky Quinn scored a memorable hat-trick. Thirty-three years later, Quinn believes Frank Lampard's side could spring another surprise.
‘It’s brought up a lot of memories for me, all positive ones,’ Quinn tells The Phoenix. ‘People keep reminding me of it because it was an iconic opening fixture.’
It remains an iconic opening fixture for Coventry fans because Quinn and co romped to an unlikely 3-0 win. The home crowd were expecting a party. Literally. Fresh from winning the FA Cup and League Cup the previous season, Arsenal had both trophies pitchside ready for a post-match parade. Ian Wright’s Arsenal were put to the sword by a Quinn hat-trick. The trophy parade was quickly cancelled.
