The Premier League kicks off next week – but do Coventry City need a new striker?

With spending during this transfer window bubbling around the £100m mark, you’d think Doug King would be putting his wallet away.

Sorry, Doug. There might still be one very expensive decision to make. The Sky Blues still look short in a couple of areas, but the most pressing concern is up front.

Unfortunately, that is also the most expensive area of the pitch to address. Strikers command top-dollar fees – just look at some of the names Coventry have been linked with this summer.

Folarin Balogun has scored 24 goals in 72 games for Monaco (and managed three in 18 while on loan at Middlesbrough in 2022). He’s been linked, but carries a reported £50m price tag. Liam Delap signed for Chelsea in 2025 for £30m. He’s scored one goal in 28 league games and is now apparently available for a move – for £50m. Then there’s Zan Vipotnik, last season’s Championship top scorer. No Premier League experience and a £30m price tag.
