A mixed bag

Mfuni, Yirenkyi, Torp, Gboho and Hamer put down a marker for a potential start on Saturday. Cherif didn't impress but starts by default. Defence - deary me, that needs some work.

Full reaction will be on The Phoenix in the morning.

FULL TIME: Coventry 1 Aston Villa 3

It's all over. The Sky Blues are out of the cup. A disappointing night in which there were a few bright sparks but Coventry's efforts were undone by poor defending.

Defensive doubts

What will worry Frank Lampard is that Coventry have come up against a Villa side with one goal in their four league games. They scored three tonight without having to do anything special, just took advantage of poor defending.

The injury to Amenda also causes a problem as it probably removes the option of playing three at the back, unless Mfuni switches to centre half (but doing so would leave defensive options on the bench very light).

Some good, some not so good

Frank Lampard will take some positives from the match. The midfield has looked improved. Yirenkyi has done his chance of a league recall no harm at all. Mfuni looked classy at left back. Gboho showed flashes.

However, the defence will be a big concern. Three goals characterised by static defending. Plenty to work on.

Into the final ten

I'll be honest, there hasn't been a whole lot to write about so far in this second half. Let's hope that changes in the final ten minutes.

SUBS: Bidwell and Onyeka on

Jake Bidwell, despite not being in the club's 25-man Premier League squad, is on in place of Mfuni. Frank Onyeka replaces Yirenkyi.

GOAL: 3-1 Villa

The Sky Blues are caught napping from a corner again and Abraham gets his second.

Poor defending in the box when you would expect the likes of Pinnock to be organising that backline.

Yet again, Coventry concede after a spell of dominant possession.

Cherif - busy but lacking end product

Sidiki Cherif manahed 56 minutes in his first Coventry start. He looked busy but didn't show that bit of quality when chances came his way.

SUBS: Tchaouna and Simms on

A double change on 57 minutes. Sakamoto and Cherif off, Tchaouna and Simms on.

Good start to the second half

A decent opening few minutes for the Sky Blues in the second 45. A spell of possession but just lacking the final ball.

A Villa change in goal

No changes for the Sky Blues at the break but Villa have changed their goalkeeper. Suzuki on for Bizot.

Thoughts from the first 45

A mixed bag. A poor start from the Sky Blues saw them a goal down early on but they showed character and had an excellent 15 minutes or so, during which time Victor Torp equalised.

Just as Coventry were looking on top, Villa regained the lead after some poor defending.
